How to Open the Command Prompt (Power Shell): Good Day! Since the birth of Microsoft, the Command Prompt has been there and Amen. Cmd is a powerful tool, with this, you can do and undo on your system

Below here is every possible way to open your command prompt, relax and make your Selection. You know, with your Command prompt, you can do a lot of great things on your PC.

If not used carefully, you could also cause very serious damage to your PC. The command prompt cuts across the processes you’ll normally take when working with your PC graphical interface, therefore serving as a kind of shortcut.

You’ll be able to open things, give your pc instructions… There’s a whole lot of stuff, just browse about the Command prompt and please tread carefully.

Every step listed here is quite easy. (I tested almost all the steps with Windows 10, it WILL work for every other window version)

NOTE: Command Prompt and Powershell are ALMOST the same, in Windows(10) this days, Microsoft uses Powershell often, they have SLIGHTLY different factors, on the course of carrying out this steps, you might come across PowerShell

You can still work with it, UNLESS the task at hand strictly demands you use Command prompt. I’ll try to identify the steps that may give you PowerShell instead of Command prompt

But know that, you can do pretty much everything in PowerShell that you can do in Command Prompt, plus a lot of other useful things. Learning How to Open the Command Prompt of your pc is the same as opening your Powershell

How To Open The Command Prompt From Task Manager

Step 1: Move your mouse cursor to your Taskbar.

Step 2: Right-click, a menu pops open.

Step 3: Towards the end of the menu, select “Task Manager” by clicking once.

Step 4: At the top of the screen, towards the far left corner, click on “File” a drop-down menu with two options open.

Step 5: Select “Run New Task“.

Step 6: With your keyboard, type “cmd” or “cmd.exe” (without the quotations πŸ™„).

Step 7: Check the “Create this task with ad….” box (This is Optional unless you want to run a task on administrative level).

Step 8: Click on “Ok“.

How To Open The Command Prompt Through Your File Explorer Address Bar

Step 1: Use the windows short cut key “Win + E” or open your file πŸ“ explorer from your taskbar.

Step 2: Double click on your address bar: The address bar is a long rectangular box, in-between your top menu and your file menu.

Alternatively, you can access the address bar by using the shortcut keys “Alt + D“.

Step 3: With your keyboard, type “cmd“.

Step 4: After typing, hit the “Enter” key on your keyboard.

Step 2: There’s a long method to do this, from your left menu options click on “Local Disk (C:)“. Follow this instructions Local Disk (C:) ->Windows -> System 32


Use the shortcut key “alt+D” to highlight the address bar. With your keyboard, type in ‘C:\Windows\System32” WITHOUT THE QUOTATION MARKS πŸ™„

Step 3: Locate and open the Command Prompt or PowerShell. If you decide to keep scrolling till you get to “Command Prompt” or “Power Shell”, you might like sleep there πŸ˜‰

At the search bar, which is at the top-right part of your screen, type in “Powershell.exe” or “cmd.exe“.

Step 4: Left click(once) on “PowerShell” or “cmd“, then Right-click to open the options menu.

Step 3: At the far left-top of your File Explorer is a “File” menu, click this, a drop-down menu shows.

Step 3: Mostly, the second option in the left section is what we are looking for.

How to Open the Command Prompt(Power Shell): Using file explorer

When you take your mouse cursor to it, a menu pops open beside it. Choose one of these options.

Open PowerShell(command prompt): This opens the PowerShell(Command Prompt) within the currently selected folder with standard permissions.

Open PowerShell(command prompt) as Administrator: This option opens a Command Prompt(Powershell) within the currently selected folder with administrator permissions.

How To Open The Command Prompt From Power User Menu

On your Windows 10, you might be greeted with PowerShell not Command Prompt

Step 1: Use the shortcut key “Win + X“.

Step 2: Click “Windows PowerShell” or “Windows Power Shell(Admin)

How to Open the Command Prompt(Power Shell)

Your pc might show you “Command Prompt” or “Command Prompt(Admin)

The difference here is, the option appended with “Admin” gives you admin privileges, while that without it gives you the standard privileges.

How To Open PowerShell From The Start Menu(Search)

Step 1: Open your start menu. At the lower left part of your task manager, click on the Windows icon.


Click on the “windows key” on your keyboard, the windows start menu opens.

Step 2: When the start menu opens, start typing “cmd” or “Powershell” depends on which you want to use.

Step 3: To the right section of the menu, you’ll see options there if you don’t, right-click on the Command Prompt(PowerShell) icon.

Step 4: Click on “Open” to open the Command Prompt(Powershell) with standard privileges or “Run as administrator” to open with administrative privileges.

Highlight the option, then shortcut keys “Ctrl+Shift+Enter“.

How To Open Command Prompt From Start Menu(Options)

With this method, you can open both Command Prompt and Powershell

Step 1: Open your Start Menu: Go to the method above to see how to.

Step 2: With your direction key, scroll down till the “W” section.

Step 3: You can choose to open PowerShell(win 10 users) or Command prompt from here.

To open PowerShell, click on the “PowerShell” folder a drop-down menu opens, choose the first Powershell option(unless you know what you are looking for) to open with standard privileges or Right Click -> Run As Administrator to launch Powershell with Administrative privileges.

How to Open the Command Prompt(Power Shell)

To open Command Prompt, click on “Windows System” folder, a drop-down menu opens. Click on “Command Prompt” to open a command prompt with standard privileges or Right Click on it -> More -> Run As Administrator to open with Administrative privileges.

How To Open Command Prompt From The Run Box

Step 1: With your keyboard, use the shortcut Win+R.

Step 2: In the search box, type “cmd” or “Powershell“.

Step 1: Open your file explorer (Win+E)

A Command Prompt(PowerShell) Easy Access Suggestion

Pin PowerShell Or Command Prompt To Task Bar

You can make it easier to access your Command Prompt or PowerShell by pinning it to your taskbar.

Step 1: Open Command Prompt(Powershell) with any of the methods up there.

Step 2: Take your mouse cursor to your taskbar and locate the command prompt Task.

Step 3: Right-click on it.

Step 4:Β Left-Click on “Pin To Taskbar“.

Now, you can easily access your command prompt or PowerShell from your taskbar.

To unpin it, follow the same steps then choose unpin.

Create A PowerShell Or Command Prompt Desktop Shortcut

They are many ways to go about this, but I’ll show you the quickest.

Step 1: In your desktop screen(i.e the screen you see when you start up your pc that contains folders, apps and your recycle bin)

Step 2: Take your cursor to and an empty section of your desktop, then right-click.

Step 3: Scroll to “New“.

Step 4: Click on “Shortcut“.

Step 5: With your keyboard, type “cmd.exe” or “PowerShell

Step 6: Click “Next“.

Step 7: On the next window that opens, give this shortcut a name, preferably “Command Prompt

Step 8: Click on “Finish“. Windows will now create a “Command Prompt” desktop shortcut

To open the command prompt or PowerShell, double click on the shortcut to launch the “Command Prompt


Rich Click, and select “Open As Administrator” to run with administrative privileges.

Run Command Prompt With Cortana
